Greetings!

I have just returned from the Washington coast, where I took myself on a week-long artist residency at the Sou'Wester Lodge.

The day before I left, I angered some hardcore Beyonce fans by suggesting on Twitter that she had a surrogate. After getting personally trolled by some dudes with a B google alert, I decided not to blog about the retreat while I was out there, for fear of someone crow-barring their way into my trailer and asserting Beyonce's childbearing in person. No thank you!

I've been visiting the Sou'Wester for the past 15 years. It is a lodge and vintage trailer park located in SeaView, on the Long Beach Peninsula.
The first time I went, I was 19 and driving to the ocean for the first time, accompanied by my fellow IPRC volunteer Fred the Punk Rock Barber. I believe he slept on the floor or the couch of the trailer, but I can't remember which. Fred would later be immortalized in the comic "Clutch", drawn as "a potato with a gumdrop head, and toothpick arms and legs holding a donut" (his choice). It was so long ago that a quest for bagels on the peninsula seemed obscene. People didn't even register the sounds my mouth was making as I asked "Bagel?".

The Sou'Wester was owned, at the time, by a geriatric couple from South Africa, Len and Miriam Atkins.
When they were both in their 80s, they sold the lodge and trailer park (called "TCH! TCH!") to some plucky Portlanders who have since revived the enterprise and introduced it to a group of young artists and sea-seekers.
They have shows, sell records, and offer artist residencies. This is my dream come true!
Staying in a vintage travel trailer within walking distance of a dark and gloomy beach is my idea of a good time. The best time. The best working conditions, aside from those offered by the RADAR Lab in Mexico.
So I trundled myself and Ponyo out there and worked on finishing my 2015 Invincible Summer Calendar. I also worked on thumbnails for my book, Fetch (out with Houghton Mifflin in 2017), and created a portrait of the trailer I stayed within.

If you are in the Pacific Northwest, check them out! Go for a visit!
Walk to the beach, spend money at the local senior citizen thrift shop, and try to stomach the sheer volume of curly fries you are served at the place by Marsh's Free Museum.

For everyone else (cartoonists and writers especially),
Can I recommend going on an artist retreat to you? Yes.
Do you need to have an organization's approval and lodgings to go on one?
No.
JUST GO.
Find someone with a cabin or some land, or a room or a trailer and ask if you can stay there for a week.
Hole up and work!
That's all there is to it.
It doesn't need to be expensive, and you do not need to be part of a "colony" (which sounds very leper or ant-like if you ask me, but of course I would still thrill to be part of one).
You be you. Bring a dog. Be out of touch. Just write and read and listen to books on tape.
If your initials are "CJ", stay off of Facebook.

Hello from beautiful Portland, Oregon!

SPX this year was one of the best shows I've been to.

I was able to attend the Small Press Expo through a generous Professional Development Grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

They helped me pack my suitcase, fly across the country, sell my wares, meet new readers, attend lectures, and meet some of my favorite artists and writers. Thank you, RACC!

All of my non-cartoonist friends kept saying "Where are you going, again?" and I had to explain, "Beautiful Bethesday, Maryland!" where I stayed in the confines of a Marriott and its surrounding Vietnamese restaurant for a solid 60 hours, mere spitting distance of Liz Prince the whole time.
Hello friends,
Good news! "Calling Dr. Laura" won a Lambda Literary Award!!!
I am over the moon about it, and also full of gratitude.

In other news, I will be doing a reading on August 8th here in Portland with A.K. Summers of "Pregnant Butch" fame. If you have not read her book, I highly recommend you do.
We will be reading at the Independent Publishing Resource Center.
1. Oh geez, everybody. It is the end of the school-year in Vermont, which means I am leaving the Center for Cartoon Studies, and headed back West. It also means that I am leaving the Vice President of NJG Inc, beloved intern and sometimes-blogger Mathew New!
Mathew was my head of Millennial Services, including Tumblr maintenance, zine construction, post-production, Ponyo-rearing, order packing and mailing list mastery. It was a true pleasure working with him, AND if you are ever looking to hire someone as a story-boarder, cartoonist, all-around great human being or most subtle jokester, I do recommend you hire him for your cartoon or organization!
Dear friend, brilliant cartoonist, and beautiful human being Catherine Peach has passed away.

Catherine was a Homorobics regular, purveyor of Unicorn smut, most treasured clothing-exchange-party guest, and was working on a graphic memoir about having a rare brain tumor at the time of her passing.

She will be dearly missed.
Hello friends.
I have more news for you.
I am stepping into 2007 and having a Tumblr.
You can access it here to see my 2014 Hourly Comics Day diaries.

Please do the things that you do with Tumblr,
liking or sharing or reblogging. You know.
I am not being purposely dense here (like people who call it "The interwebs"), or fake-techphobic,
I genuinely am just getting a hang of Tumblr.
Hello out there!
2 things:
1. I am re-launching Homorobics, now titled Punk Aerobics to fit the scene here in happenin' White River Junction, Vermont! The details are forthcoming, and will be posted on my Homorobics blog as they appear. Come do leg lifts with me if you are in the area!

2. Vermont's independent weekly paper, 7 Days, did a feature on yours truly, which you can read here.
It features an author photo taken by Ally Picard , who also took this photo of me with Wishbone a few years ago, for a grunge-themed dance night:

Dear Readers,
Greetings from snowy White River Junction, Vermont!
I have good news and bad news.
Let's start with the good news first.

1. I painted my favorite sort of cow for Townshends Teahouse in Bozeman, Montana! Seen above, the cow mentioned is Highland Cattle, with some bubble tea, and some nice birds, and an upside-down blonde sloth overhead! If you are in Montana, swing by and see it.
In case you didn't know, I also painted signs for their Division Street Teahouse, Alberta, and Eugene!

2. Good news: Somebody really super nice person named Danielle (@bearofroses on twitter) sent me some hand-knitted chicken sweaters for the ladies while I was visiting them over the winter break.
Perla is shown above (pre-nail-trim) wearing some lovely warm apparel.

Now the bad news.
While I was in Portland, the chickens were murdered by a raccoon.
People online kept saying "What!? Why!?".
I would rather not dredge up the details.
My best answer to "Why", then, is that life is sad and unfair sometimes, and chicken life is delicate and sometimes fleeting.

These were the first chickens I had (and got close to) in a long time, so it was very very sad.
I do believe they had a luxurious life, though. They lived a clean and uncluttered environment, with free access to a giant yard and garden, with no chicken drama since there were only two of them. Their only pain in life is that they had to be picked up and cradled and photographed more often than they would have liked.
So, I'm sorry to deliver this news.

3. The very morning I discovered the chickens had passed away, I was scheduled to go on KBOO to talk about Calling Dr. Laura on the show "Words and Pictures", with the lovely host Conch.
Regarding the time, or the ladies, I don't even know what to say. They are the third and fourth animals to pass from my life within one year, all coinciding with times I've had to make very public appearances in service to the book. It's hard and it's sad and it's weird, but I have to do both at the same time. Grieve my animals and go talk to people about my family. I enjoy talking to people about the book, about art, and about the story, so it is a nice distraction, but please don't imagine I have forgotten any of the kind creatures to pass through my life this year. In fact, a sad comic about Beija is forthcoming.

Anyway, I mentioned the girls on the radio, and brought Ponyo along to fulfill her duties as "emotional support".
4. Ponyo visited the senior citizens at The Marie Smith Center with me while we were there, and accompanied me to Olympia's Timberland Regional Public Library for a spirited reading from Tell It Like It Tiz with collaborator Marc Parker!
Tell It Like It Tiz, my zine anthology of comics and writing from my time spent volunteering with senior citizens, is still available through my Etsy shop. It is a pick-me-up, and a gift appropriate for all ages.

5. Speaking of Etsy, my 2014 Calendars are now $10 in my Etsy shop! AND the 2013 Invincible Summer/Clutch split comic is available there for $3! Run, don't walk to pick up these titles.
First up, gee whiz, look at all the end of the year attention Calling Dr. Laura is getting!

It was in the running for Best Graphic Novel of the Year over at Goodreads!

Salon.com named it one of their Ten Unforgettable Graphic Novels of 2013, calling it "idiosyncratic and adorable" while packing "a surprising emotional wallop!"

And Pop Candy lists it over on USA Today as one of 2013's Best Graphic Novels!

Wow! Ol' NJG is really hitting the big times. But that's not all the news! No way, there's more!

Also! Don't forget Lil Bub's Lil Book is now available to order! Nicole got her copy in the mail just yesterday, and it looks great! Not to mention there's some Lil Bub fan art by Nicole herself in there!

Hello!
It's been a while. I'm here in Vermont, in the midst of watching Breaking Bad with Ponyo, and I have new calendars to show you!
I got the calendars printed at Brown Printing in Portland, and had my pet chicken Phyllis help me with some modeling while I was there. They are "Rubine Red", which looks like a hot hot pink!
I'm attaching some photos below.

ALSO, I have a new intern!
Please welcome cartoonist Mathew New the NJG Inc.
He is doing exhaustive work teaching Ponyo to jump through a hoop, photographing original art of cats in wigs, and writing copy about teams of Owlets and what they might want.

When
we first started going to the Marie Smith Center, I had no strong
connection to the seniors in my life besides our mutual appreciation for
orthopedic footwear. My own grandfather experiences consisted of him
yelling
at me to speak up, telling me to find a man with clean
fingernails, and saying that Gone With The Wind and The Bible were the
only books I needed to read.Walking into the Marie
Smith Center in North Portland, I realized I had no idea how to even
speak to old people. My first day there was during a music therapy hour
with a woman singing slowly "If you're happy and you know it clap your
hands." to a room full of her elders. Let's just say, I started stiffly.
Politely. Loudly.

I came in with a combination of zine
teaching experience and a love of The Duplex Planet under my belt. I
brought in stacks of zines and comics and tried to talk to the
participants about the joys of self publishing.

I soon
discovered they did not give a shit in hearing about self publishing,
but they were interested in these curious young people who came in week
after week with weird questions and funny hair styles and pet chickens.
We went on vacations and brought them back souvenirs, we asked them for
advice, and we accepted loads of hard candy from our new friends. We
documented each day on computer paper from the front desk, and after a
while pasted together a small zine whose title was based on the tag line
of participant Malcolm: "Tell It Like It Tiz'."
((Malcolm was a
famous jazz drummer who would refer to people as "cats" in his stories
and punctuate each tale with "I Tell It Like It Tiz. Like it T-I-Z!".))

When we brought in the zine for the first time, with the
participants faces and life stories reflected back at them, there was a
moment of curiosity, some skepticism, and then deep pride (that we
observed) as each person discovered their own contributions and life
stories had been appreciated. Had been listened to, written down, and
produced as this small book. Something they could give to their friends
and families. Senior stars were born!

After the first
issue, the group really got rolling. The main players, the people who
were there each week, got super invested. Donald would shepard new
people into zine culture when they were wheeled or walked up to our
table. He would explain what a zine was, and proudly show them our
project. He would even gently interview newcomers for our benefit. Miss
Bee came dutifully every Friday, getting walked over with her latest
beading or sewing project. She gave us beaded necklaces, bracelets, and
rings, and when Marc was trying to quit smoking, she rode his ass and
brought him jars of peanuts to put in his mouth instead.

She will sometimes mention that she is grateful to have her stories put
down on paper because she cannot write, but she appreciates our
"beautiful hands" and is finally being appreciated on paper for the
years she has lived through, and the years she has given to other
people. I'm happy to do that for her. I'm happy to have these people as
my friends, and as my surrogate family. We visit them in the hospital
and bring them flowers. They are upset when we don't show up, they are
worried when we are sick or when I get in 17 car accidents a year. They
meet our new pets, judge our girlfriends, and give us unsolicited hair
advice.

This book is a story of inter-generational friendship. I'm sorry to get sappy and saccharine, but that's what this project is.

To be honest, I would make the book with or without a Kickstarter.
There is just no fucking way I would let the seniors at the Marie Smith
Center down. They have been generous enough to lend us their time and
their stories, and Miss Bee was nice enough to let us videotape her.

Now I write to ask if you, reader, will consider donating or being
generous with them. We have just a few hours left until our Kickstarter
goal, and we would appreciate your pre-order or contribution to the
project greatly. I believe that a book, a real life giant book, will
take the hint of pride and validation our tiny zine has given them, and
put it through the roof.

Six and a half years later, Marc
Parker and I still attend the Marie Smith Center every Friday. We do it
for free*, we do it for fun. We get as much out of it as the
participants, truthfully more.

Thank you for taking a glimpse
into our time there by reading this letter, and for considering our
Kickstarter and our project. We hope you will contribute, pre-order a
copy, and enjoy the musings of North Portland's elder population, as
told by two street toughs (i.e. 30-something zinesters).

Have a nice Monday!
I tell it like it T-I-Z!
Sincerely,
Nicole J. Georges
*We have only just revealed to the participants this past year that we
come there as volunteers, not as staff or from any organization. They
were surprised, and now they sometimes bark "You getting paid yet?".
To be transparent with you, we did get small artist fees from the
project this year through a grant from The Regional Arts and Culture
Council, after which we started attending the center 2-3 times a week
instead of just once , and meeting weekly to assemble, edit and assemble
the book. There, now you know everything!
Hello, humans!

My friend Marc Parker and I have been visiting senior citizens in North Portland once a week, every week, for six and a half years. FOR FREE! For Fun!
We like them, they like/tolerate us, and we make a zine about them. The zine is called Tell It Like It Tiz', and it is made up of their stories, interviews, advice, art, and comics Marc and I have drawn about the our day to day interactions at the senior center.

After all this time, we've decided to make a book.
This project is supported by the Regional Art & Culture Council (RACC), which is lovely, validating, and so exciting, but now we seek YOUR support.
We need to raise $5000 to print & promote the book. If we exceed our goal, we will take it on the road to senior centers and libraries.
If you have any interest in this project, or would like to pre-order the book, please do so via our Kickstarter.

We would love it if people could use this as a tool to pre-order the book, but if you'd like to give more we have some incentives for you that include (but are not limited to):
Lunch with Me & Marc, after which we make a custom zine for you about the experience,
Signed glamour shots of our most vocal and handsome senior citizens,
A Portland prize pack including Urban Cheesecraft Kits (vegan available), Zumba lessons with Pulse PDX, & delicious Coffee,
or a custom drawing of you by myself and Marc Parker.

Consider it!
If you are horribly broke, like out-turned pockets broke, please do share this with someone who would appreciate it.

Thank you and thank you.

Hello, reader friends. The last time I posted here, I was feeling so blue about losing Beija Georges. Losing Wishbone was no small feat, but B.G. leaving was just horrible.
I raised her and protected her for fifteen years, and in turn she raised and protected me.

I realized the other week that I may never ever get over Beija Georges. Like ever ever.

And then I met this new animal, by chance.
A chihuahua/shiba-inu whom I have adopted and named Ponyo, also known as Paw Paw.
She is a gentle and kind little fox with no personality defects to speak of.
She likes fetching, meeting new people, and being scratched under the collar.
She also happens to be a quick study at the art of the afternoon nap, which is an important quality in a young dog.
I hope you get to meet her. In drawings, at least.

Thank you for your ongoing support through this time, and thank you for your kind cards of condolence. They are all read and appreciated.

Sincerely,

Dear Readers, strangers and friends,

It has been a very busy two months (with touring and everything) , and now that I am home the loss of the dogs is hitting hard.
If you have a request, or an order, and it takes me a little while to respond, please understand.
And if you are someone who generously donated when Beija had cancer this fall, thank you again so very much. We appreciated the extra time together.

Take care,
